Wildflower Social at Illiniwek: Event Recap

| Native Plants

written by Emma Harmon

Last Friday, we gathered at Illiniwek Forest Preserve to meander down the trail and see what we could see! It was an awesome way to practice identification of woodland plants and to spot some fun blooms. The blue phlox that was popping up everywhere was completely enchanting, and we were all totally captivated by the large toad trillium scattered all along our path.

Rob was our fearless leader and professor, both teaching and quizzing us on the plants we passed. We learned what a petiole is and how it can help identify one plant from another. We found many natives plus a few non-native and invasive species, pulled up some garlic mustard, ate donuts, enjoyed the conversation, and admired the beauty around us. It was a great morning. We are already looking forward to the next nature walk!
