Native Gardening in Your Yard
Public Welcome Free Event Program/Speaker Presentation Public Restroom Free Public Parking Drinking Fountains
Native gardening is not Ken Wellnitz's profession, but in recent years it has become very important to him. His first gardening experience was gardening with his mother who had a relatively large flower garden on the farm. Years later after purchasing houses, he began to make some small flower and vegetable gardens but started to really get into flower gardens after he purchased his current house in 1995. He began to see the need for native plants around 2015 and became serious about converting the flower beds to native plants in 2019. In 2022, Ken joined Wild Ones Quad Cities whose mission is education in native gardening. He has developed a program to help show his steps and reasons for transitioning to natives.

Bi-CAN Backyard Bee Blitz
Online/Virtual
Public Welcome Family Friendly Free Event
Calling all nature lovers in Scott and Muscatine Counties in Iowa, or Rock Island, Henry, and Mercer Counties in Illinois!
All are invited to get outside and snap pictures of any creature seen visiting a flower on July 28-30th. The Backyard Bee Blitz is similar to a BioBlitz, an activity in which all of the biodiversity in a specific area is examined, to provide a snapshot in time of the flora and fauna present. During the Backyard Bee Blitz, we seek to know what species of bees and other insects are seen visiting flowers, and where they are, on this specific weekend.
*Don't worry if you can't identify an insect on your own! Simply upload your photo, and the ID work can be done for you through iNaturalist.
Prizes will be given to the person who makes the FIRST observation in the project, and to the person who makes the MOST observations in the project.
To Participate:
1. Download the iNaturalist App and join the '2023 Bi-CAN Backyard Bee Blitz' project.
2. Go outside anytime on July 28, 29, or 30 and take photos of any creature seen visiting a flower.
3. Upload the photos to iNaturalist. You don't need to upload them immediately; just be sure to select the correct date when uploading. They will automatically be counted as part of the Backyard Bee Blitz!
*For detailed instructions on how to participate, visit:

The 2023 Backyard Bee Blitz is brought to you by Bi-CAN, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Rock Island County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Nahant Marsh.

Bi-CAN Invasive Species Workshop
This event is hosted by the Bi-State Conservation Action Network, Rock Island County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the University of Illinois Extension Henry, Mercer, Rock Island Stark.
Join us at this unique private property that is seldom seen by the public!
This workshop will cover a variety of invasive species in woodland, wetland, and prairie habitats. There will also be sessions on control methods, identification, and native alternatives. Participants should dress for the outdoors, as this workshop will not have any indoor access. A buffet style lunch will be provided. Please bring a reusable water bottle if you have one.
Presentations include:
Species of Concern and the Home Landscape:
For many gardeners, growing new and unusual plants is thrilling. For others, durability, diseases and pest resistance, or cultural tradition are reasons to incorporate non-native plants into a landscape. Despite recent landscape trends emphasizing the use of native plants, non-native plants are not inherently problematic, but a few bad actors can cause an outside amount of damage to local ecosystems. In this session, Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator Emily Swihart will explore plant species that possess characteristics that cause conservationists to be concerned, are still available for purchase in the nursery industry, and offer suggestions for alternative plant species.
Plant ID Hike:
In this session, we will ID native and non-native plants, discuss native alternatives to non-native species, and discuss overall strategies for Midwest ecosystem restoration.
Tips, Tricks, and Tools for Managing Invasives:
Do you know how many GPA your 2 gallon sprayer is applying? If not, we can show you how to properly calibrate your sprayer to ensure you are following the labeled rates. We will have a large variety of the tools on hand that they use to combat and control invasive species, along with instruction on the proper tool use. They will discuss what methods of control, products, and timing work best for specific species, such as honeysuckle and Japanese knotweed.
Restoration on Private Lands:
Focus will be on contacting a qualified forester, developing a forest management plan, using that plan to apply for conservation programs, and how to implement the plan to receive cost assistance.
Woodland Management:
In this session we will discuss a variety of woodland management practices that can help promote recreation, water quality, wildlife habitat, wood products, and other uses in your woodland.
Registration is REQUIRED. Details can be found at https://nahantmarsh.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/nahantmarsh/event.jsp?event=5477

Join Wild Ones Honorary Director Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats, life cycles, pollen collection, brood rearing, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees.
When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees, many factors such as seasonal phenology, nesting strategies, and flower preferences must be considered—and with approximately 3,600 species in North America (north of Mexico), there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees.
